smART Moves! art camp is presented by MU's School of Visual Studies in Columbia, Missouri and its community outreach program, Art on the Move. Camp dates are June 9-13, 2025 with classes from 8:45 a.m.–4 p.m.

A real-life college experience

Art Camp for Teens

The program is designed to give high-school aged teens (14-19 y/o) the opportunity to learn college level skills over a week-long intensive which can be taken as a day camp or overnight camp experience. Meal plans are included for both day campers and overnight campers who will stay in the dorms. 

Overnight campers arrive on the Sunday before camp (June 8, 2025) and check out on the Saturday after camp (June 14, 2025) All campers are invited to attend a closing reception in the Fine Arts Building with friends and family on Saturday, June 14, 12-2 p.m.

Morning and afternoon sessions

Morning Session: 9 a.m.-noon

  • Tapestry Weaving
    C. Pazia Mannella

    Learn about weaving using frame looms focusing on tapestry and experimental weaving techniques to create pattern, texture, and imagery.

  • Making Comics 
    Nick Potter

    Students will be introduced to storytelling and illustration strategies and create a collaborative comic book.

  • Ceramic Lanterns
    Andrew Long

    Construct a ceramic lantern using basic slab construction.

Afternoon Session: 1-4 p.m.

  • Monoprinting on Clay: Exploring Surface Design
    Summer Hall

    Learn how to cut and alter slabs, apply slip and glaze, and monoprinting techniques.

  • Self-Publish Together
    Oswaldo García

    Learn how to self-publish their own creations by exploring a variety of printing formats using the risograph machine, incorporating text and images.

  • Experimental Design Lab: Graphic Design
    Igor Arume

    As an introduction to the creating thinking process involved in graphic design and applications, this course will encourage collaboration between students through hands-on activities.

4 p.m.–Day camp released

4-5:15 p.m.–Free time

5:30-6:30 p.m.–Dinner

6:30-8:30 p.m.–Activities

9 p.m.–Overnight camp curfew
