School of Visual Studies
Overview
The Art History program emphasizes visual literacy, art interpretation, and communication skills through a blend of classroom learning and hands-on experiences. Students gain practical experience through internships and research assistantships at museums in Missouri and across the nation, as well as through prestigious fellowships like Fulbright, Smithsonian, and Kress. They benefit from rich campus resources such as the Museum of Art and Archaeology, the State Historical Society of Missouri, and Ellis Library, along with access to major art collections in St. Louis and Kansas City. Graduates pursue diverse careers in museums, galleries, education, government, and research institutions nationwide. The B.A. and M.A. degrees prepare students for professional roles in the arts and museums, while the Ph.D. focuses on academic research, teaching, and curatorial work.
