We’ve put together a handy check list below to help you move through each step of the internship credit process.

Student Checklist

You must currently be a declared major to enroll. For instance, Art majors can receive credit for a qualifying internship under the course ART VS 3030. You may repeat the internship for up to 6 credit hours. 

  1. Clarify Your Internship Goals: Before diving into the search, take a moment to define your internship goals. Consider the type of work you're interested in, the skills you want to develop, and the kind of organization you'd like to work with. 
     
  2. Search for Internship Opportunities: 
    • Handshake – every student has an account. Activate yours, fill in your details, and explore job postings tailored to your interests. 
    • LinkedIn: Connect with professionals and discover job opportunities. Build your network and showcase your skills to potential employers. 
    • MU Career Center: For helpful job search guidance, visit the MU Career Center. 
       
  3. Determine Your Hours: Decide how many hours you can dedicate to your internship, as this will determine the credit hours you'll earn: o 40 hours = 1 credit o 80 hours = 2 credits 
    • 120 hours = 3 credits 

  4. Identify a Faculty Member: Reach out to an SVS faculty member to request their support as faculty mentor for your internship credits. Be sure to outline the internship you’ve arranged, who will serve as your on-site mentor or coordinator, and how many hours/credits you are seeking. 
  5. Complete the Internship Course Application Online Form: Click Here to Preview Application. Fill out the application form: [Online Internship Application]. 
     
  6. Registration: Once your application is approved, you'll receive a course permission number from your faculty mentor. Use the permission number to register for the appropriate course and section with your faculty mentor in MyZou. 
     
  7. Connect with Your Mentor: Check in with your SVS faculty mentor to discuss course expectations, plan meetings at the start, mid-term, conclusion of your internship. 
     
  8. Internship Course Canvas Assignments: Complete all course assignments and your final assessment.
