SVS Film Studies Learning Objectives

Students who successfully complete a degree in Film Studies will be able to:

  • Develop a broad view of cinema, related media, and the histories of film-producing cultures.  
  • Identify the visual and narrative characteristics of films and interpret films based on a range of diverse historical, cultural, and ideological contexts. 
  • Apply key terms for film analysis and demonstrate ability to utilize those terms through discussion, writing, and multimedia projects.  
  • Practice interpretive analyses of film through employing close reading skills. 

Students who successfully complete a degree in Film Studies – Film Production emphasis will be able to:

  • Develop a broad view of cinema, related media, and the histories of film-producing cultures.  
  • Develop and master the technical skills using cameras, audio, and lighting equipment to excel as a filmmaker and work collaboratively on sets.
  • Demonstrate the creative capacity and professional proficiency to successfully initiate, produce, and distribute film and video projects.
  • Apply theoretical frameworks to their own creative productions. 
  • Create original films and videos using their own distinctive voice.
