Sarah Rady is a ceramic artist based in Columbia, Missouri, she earned her BFA from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, originally from Los Angeles. Her undergraduate work was focused on functional works in stoneware firing at cone 5-6, this practice centered on exploring themes of memory across place through botanicals. Currently working in earthenware clay and firing between cone 04-1, her practice centers on reinventing historical sculptural pieces and imagery into wall hangings and functional works.
Her work is informed by studying, replicating and translating historical pattern and texture of Mayan ceramic culture. Drawing on organic forms and patterns that feel familiar yet ambiguous as to place. Through pattern application, hand building, wheel throwing, and alteration, she develops surfaces that register touch recalling the passing of time. Texture becomes a way of remembering the passing of time.
Her color palette draws from Guatemalan textiles, reduced to greens, purple, and a reddish-brown. Her forms are inspired by shapes that are taken from glyphs.
Rady approaches making with attention and care, where form emerges through negotiation rather than control.
She has exhibited in a group exhibition in the Medici gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska as well as juried exhibitions including the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery in Lincoln, Nebraska and the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri.
