Nathan Halwel

Nate Halwel (he/him) is a visual artist from Columbia, Missouri. He studied Painting and Illustration at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, and was awarded his BFA in Illustration from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2015. Nate has worked professionally in Columbia as a graphic designer and commission artist for local organizations like The We Always Swing Jazz series and Ikaria Design Company. Nate is currently pursuing his MFA in Painting at the University of Missouri.

Nate’s current painting practice investigates the photograph as a convergence of subject, narrative, and material dichotomies through representational drawing and painting on paper. He is interested in the ways drawing and painting processes form dialogue with the visual conventions of selected images, and can shape the narrative outcomes surrounding immediacy, memory, sentiment, and style.
