Elevate Your Art

MFA at Mizzou

The University of Missouri SVS Art MFA offers exceptional faculty mentorship, state-of-the-art studio space, and the time and support to take your work to the next level. Many graduate students create in nearly 8,000 square feet of newly renovated studios on campus.

Located in Columbia, Missouri—between Kansas City and St. Louis—our three-year MFA provides the space to develop competitive, thought-provoking projects that engage contemporary discourse.

All qualifying MFA students receive teaching or technician assistantships with full tuition waivers. Combined with Columbia’s low cost of living and vibrant arts scene, our MFA allows students to focus on their work without the weight of excessive student loans. The city’s creative energy is fueled by three colleges, a dynamic live-music scene, True/False Film Festival, and an expansive riverside trail network.

Teaching Assistantships

In exchange for a full-tuition waiver, health care subsidy and stipend, all MFA candidates work 0.5 FTE (two, 10 hour per week assistantship appointments each semester). First year MFA candidates typically serve as GTAs: studio technicians (e.g. RISO, Printmaking, Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics, Fibers), Bingham Gallery assistant, woodshop monitor, or as a teaching assistant in our large lecture class 1020 Intro to Visual Studies. Second and third year MFA candidates typically serve as Graduate Instructors in foundations or introductory-level studio courses.
