Understories, Similar Veins by MU Artist in Residence, Tali Weinberg

Columbia, MO: Understories, Similar Veins, is a solo exhibition, featuring the work of interdisciplinary artist and weaver, and Mizzou Artist in Residence, Tali Weinberg. This show brings together weavings and sculptures made between 2021 and 2024 that investigate the interconnected harms extraction inflicts on humans and the earth, from rising temperatures and plastic proliferation to species loss and illness. As an MU Artist in Residence, Weinberg is working closely with the Fibers department within the School of Visual Studies and in partnership with departments across campus throughout the semester.
The exhibition is on view from September 17, 2024 through October 15, 2024. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, September 19, 2024 from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. as a part of Art After Hours MU’s College of Arts and Science public art walk. Light refreshments will be served, compliments of Dive Bar. Weinberg will present a public lecture following the reception from 7:30 - 8:30 pm in 101 Swallow Hall. Financial assistance for this project has been provided by MU’s Artist in Residence program and the Eric Sweet Memorial Fund.
The Bingham Gallery is an exhibition space and living laboratory for contemporary art practice and interpretation. Central to the interdisciplinary curriculum of the School of Visual Studies, the gallery provides a platform for critical thinking across media, disciplines, cultures, and contexts. Through the exhibition of a diverse array of artwork created by student, emerging, established, and visiting artists, the gallery provides the SVS, university, and local communities with opportunities for direct involvement and exchange with the visual arts; informs and deepens the curriculum taught in the School of Visual Studies; serves as a training ground for students as emerging arts professionals in the arts economy.
Established in 2017, the MU School of Visual Studies merges four disciplines: art, art history, film studies, and digital storytelling. This dynamic program aims to graduate future generations of outstanding critical thinkers, inventive problem solvers, and makers of conscientious, well-crafted art while preparing them for professional careers in the contemporary art world.
