Lampo Leong, PhD, Central Academy of Fine Arts; MFA, California College of the Arts, is an painter, calligrapher, and multimedia artist who is currently a Professor of Art at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is also a Visiting Professor at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and has been named the Weiner Distinguished Professor at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Leong has served as judge for over 20 art competitions and presented more than 100 lectures across the United States and Asia at institutions and conferences such as the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, College Art Association 92nd Annual Conference, Yeongwol Museum International Forum in South Korea, Sichuan University, Chongqing University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shanghai University, Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, University of Macao, and Tainan National University of the Arts.
Leong's work has been featured in international contemporary art auctions such as Christie's, Ravenel, Poly, etc., and in art expos and museums and galleries worldwide through over 60 solo and 300 juried/curated group exhibitions, including The Art of Writing in Germany, Question at the Cantor Center for Visual Arts, the International Contemporary Masters at the Southern Nevada Museum of Fine Art, Shining Stars: 4 Cultural Visionaries of Contemporary Painting at the Pacific Heritage Museum in San Francisco, Language Non Language at the Ethan Cohen Fine Art in New York, the Taipei International Modern Ink Painting Biennial, Art of China, The 11th National Fine Arts Exhibition in China, Re-Ink: Invitational Exhibition of Contemporary Ink Painting at Today Art Museum in Beijing, the First Nanjing Internatinal Art Festival, and Macao’s Proposed Artworks for the 54th Venice Biennale at the Museu de Arte de Macau. Leong has also collaborated with composers and dancers on video animations, installations, and multimedia performances, which have premiered in San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Kansas City’s Kauffman Center for Performing Arts, Skaneateles Festival in New York, and Musicacoustica-Beijing. He has received over 60 awards, including a Gold Medal at the Creative Quarterly international art competition in New York. In addition, Leong has published several books of his paintings and calligraphy, more than 50 essays on the topics of formalism and art education, and currently completing a book of theoretical research entitled Omega Curve: A Prototype for Dynamic Forces in Visual Art.
Leong’s works can be found in more than 10 museum and hundreds of notable corporate and private collections, including The Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Guangdong Museum of Art, Macao Art Museum, The Written Art Foundation in Germany, as well as public art commissions for the Columbia City Hall and a 26-foot-diameter granite inset calligraphic medallion for a San Francisco city park. Leong's work has been featured in hundreds of reviews, publications, citations, and television interviews, including the front cover of New Art International in New York and the Creative Genius: 100 Contemporary Artists in London. Leong is a recipient of the Faculty-Alumni Award by the University of Missouri-Columbia and, in 1999, the San Francisco Mayor proclaimed November 19th to be Lampo Leong Day.
