Vessels of Humility.

The University of Missouri’s George Caleb Bingham Gallery presents Vessels of Humility, an MFA exhibition featuring work by University of Missouri MFA candidate, Anthony Pearson.

Artist Statement:  

Anthony Pearson’s ceramic work is influenced by historical pottery and the vast barren Southwestern landscape. It consists of wheel thrown and hand formed vessels such as jars, boxes and vases. These vessels become a vehicle for conversation and embody the essence of humility. Pearson makes work with a mindset of accepting the irregularities in the vessels. By crudely scrapping the surfaces and additions of clay textures he produces multiple irregularities or imperfections, making the objects more relatable to the individual, as we are also imperfect ourselves.   

 Through his making, Pearson carries this modest feeling into his vessels. He creates individual pieces to be viewed and experienced one by one. Pearson concentrates on using simple methods throughout his whole process. He believes through this aesthetic, he is able to capture the gentle emotions he wants to convey.
