Didi Setzin, MA Art History Student, shares successful internship at the Columbia Art League
While working toward her MA in Art History, Didi Setzin interned with the Columbia Art League last summer. Setzin, originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, came to MU because of her father, a Mizzou School of Journalism alum.
Setzin kept a journal of her observations and shared with us what she learned during her time at CAL. Involved in multiple shows including Summer Membership, Lush, and Mentorship, Setzin shares, "I gained valuable insights into the business and community aspects of the organization. It was a great experience learning how a non-profit gallery operates, how it is designed, and how it engages with its community.”
Setzin particularly enjoyed the Membership Show saying, “It provided a great opportunity to see how the gallery fosters relationships within its community. I learned a lot about the importance of community involvement and how it contributes to the success of a gallery.”
Setzin has always had an appreciation for art from high school and into her undergrad classes. Visiting galleries on school trips deepened Setzin's interest in art history.
"These experiences cultivated my passion for art history and ultimately led me to pursue it as a major," she shares. "My research interests lie at the intersection of art history movements and their visual influence on fashion and historical costumes. I am particularly interested in exploring how aesthetics and styles within the art world have influenced how we dress over time. Additionally, I would like to further research how paintings can be used to depict the history of fashion and dress.”
After completing her Master's in Art History, Setzin plans to work as an art consultant or appraiser for both private and public collections. “Additionally, I am curious about the possibility of working with law firms to consult on artists' rights and intellectual property matters.”
Outside of the program, Setzin enjoys playing chess and is an active member of the chess club. She hopes to continue improving her skills and eventually participate in national competitions.
