Sculpture occupies a unique position within the Art Department's curriculum in that it is defined by its discipline rather than by its materials. For instance, ceramicists are required to handle clay, printmakers use ink and a painter is expected to employ paint. Sculptors, on the other hand, are free to use any material that allows them to explore mass and volume in time and space.
