Graphic Design Transfer Information

Transfer Student Information

The Graphic Design Program in the School of Visual Studies (SVS) welcomes transfer students from both Community Colleges and four-year colleges and universities.

To start the Graphic Design program, all students must complete the SVS Foundation courses:

  • 2-D Materials and Methods (ART_GNRL 1030)
  • 3-D Materials and Methods (ART_GNRL 1040)
  • Drawing: Materials and Methods (ART_DRAW 1050)

Once the foundation courses have been completed, students can request a permission for the first class in the Graphic Design sequence (ARTGD_VS 2410: GD1-Intro to Typography.) It is taught every Fall semester. We do allow students to enroll in GD1 at the same time as one of the Foundation courses.

At the end of the Fall semester we conduct a Graphic Design Portfolio Review. All students who are interested in pursuing a BA or BFA in Graphic Design must turn in all work completed in GD1, a Letter of Intent and an Unofficial Transcript to the Design Faculty for review. Those who pass the review will be given permission numbers for the next course in the sequence and allowed to continue in the program.

Once accepted into the Graphic Design Program, students will take the four core courses in the sequence and the writing-intensive capstone course (ARTGE_VS 4976W - Design - Senior Seminar).

Core Graphic Design Courses (Core classes are sequential and taken in consecutive semesters)

  • ARTGD_VS 2420: GD2-Design Methods & Production (Spring)

  • ARTGD_VS 4400: GD4-Design Systems (Spring)
  • ARTGD_VS 4410: GD5-Professional Portfolio Development (Fall & Spring)

In addition, students can build stronger professional portfolios with additional coursework that specializes on expanded graphic design practice.

  • ARTGD_VS 2430: Calligraphy and Hand Lettering (Spring)
  • ARTGD_VS 3440: Packaging Design (Fall)
  • ARTGD_VS 3441: The History of Graphic Design (Fall & Spring)
