smART Moves! summer art intensive for teens, 2023

smART Moves! is an arts intensive summer camp for teens presented by the University of Missouri’s School of Visual Studies and its community outreach program, Art on the Move, which runs June 12 - 16th, 2023 from 8:45am - 4pm. The program is designed to give high-school aged teens (14 - 19 y/o) a real-life college experience through a fun and safe summer camp on Mizzou’s beautiful Columbia, MO campus. Students will learn college level skills over a week-long intensive which can be taken as a day camp or overnight camp experience. Meal plans are available for day campers. Dorm stay and meal plans included for overnight campers. All campers are invited to attend a welcome event on June 11th and a closing reception on June 17th with friends and family.

 

Morning Session:

Character Design taught by Lisa Simms (9am-12pm)

In this course students will design a unique character and create a portrait painting. 

Experimental Mixed Media Quilting taught by Sophia Pickering (9am-12pm)

Using painting, collage, and fibers techniques, students will create an experimental quilt.

Afternoon Session:

Making Comics taught by Nick Potter (1pm-4pm)

In this course students will be introduced to the practice of making comics.

Puppet as Tool, Puppet as Vessel taught by Marina Cano (1pm-4pm)

With the idea that puppetry is an expression of self, explore puppetry as a tool or vessel. Students will create a body extension wearable, or marionette form.

Camp Daily Schedule:

7:00 - 8:30am - Breakfast available

8:45 - 9:00am - Campers arrive to first class

9:00am - 12:00pm - Morning Session

12:00pm -1:00pm - Lunch

1:00pm - 4:00pm - Afternoon Session

4:00pm - Day camp released

4:00 - 9:00pm - Overnight camp activities/Dinner

9:00pm - Overnight camp curfew
