In Being Beside is the 2024 Faculty Showcase for the School of Visual Studies at the University of Missouri. This group exhibition shares the recent work of faculty across five departments: art, graphic design, film studies, digital storytelling and art history. As the title suggests, and in consideration of AFTER PROMPTS, the work is organized to create relationships between the works of faculty across discipline and media, to tell the story of the school's collaborative and pedagogical diversity.
AFTER PROMPTS Statement: The rising ubiquity of generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools has captivated the world of higher education. But what are the stakes for visual knowledge production? What advantages might text-to-image and text-to-video models present in the academic setting of the fine arts? What risks can be forecasted? And how might this technology deepen or expand the contentious and storied discourse on the nature of authorship? Dr. Cristina Mislán, Dr. Nick Potter, Alejandra Salinas, and Travis Shaffer address these questions and more in a special faculty panel discussion moderated by Rain Embuscado.
