Joanna Hearne is an Associate Professor of film studies in the English Department.  She teaches courses in Native American and global Indigenous media; the history of film genres such as documentary, animation and westerns; and film and digital media theory.  She has published articles in journals such as Screen and the Journal of Popular Film and Television, and has published two books: Native Recognition: Indigenous Cinema and the Western (SUNY Press 2012) and “Smoke Signals”: Native Cinema Rising (University of Nebraska Press, 2012).  In 2012 she was awarded a University of Missouri Kemper Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching.
