Cherie Sampson, guest artist for Life & Literature Performance Series

Sunday, October 20, 2019 2:00pm
Studio 4, McKee Gymnasium

School of Visual Studies Associate Professor Cherie Sampson will be a guest artist in the 17th Annual Life and Literature Performance Series.

Cutting-edge original and adapted works by MU student and faculty authors presenting short solo performances, poetry, and ethnographic adaptations will be featured. Short plays by the Climate Change Theatre Action project will also be presented. Professor Heather Carver is artistic director and series founder.

Sampson will present an autobiographical solo performance work-in-process titled "" that depicts a life altered by a diagnosis of hereditary breast cancer. Throughout 2017, the artist documented her experience with the cancer, from diagnosis through treatment and recovery. The documentation has been the material for a series of short films and the content for the live performance "" The performance integrates movement within a mediated space of projected video imagery and sound. Throughout 2019, the short films have screened in video art, film music, and screendance festivals in the U.S., Mexico, France, India, Spain, and the U.K. The Life & Literature series will be the first presentation of the live performance, representing the opening vignettes of what will eventually become an evening-length solo piece. Directed by Xiomara Cornejo.

Note: It is highly recommended that you purchase tickets as soon as possible; many theatre faculty require their students to attend. In a run of five performances from Wednesday through Sunday, there is usually not a seat left in the house. You will not be likely to be able to purchase a ticket the evening/day of a performance.
